Abbott Laboratories Honors Outstanding Scientists and Engineers For Scientific Excellence, Leadership, and InnovationABBOTT PARK, Ill., Sep 21, 2001 /PRNewswire/ -- Abbott Laboratories
(NYSE: ABT) today announced that 13 Abbott scientists were inducted as new or
promoted members of the prestigious Volwiler Society for their scientific
excellence and leadership. Abbott additionally recognized an outstanding
researcher and two internal research teams for their scientific leadership and
innovation.
Abbott named G. Richard Granneman, of Lindenhurst, Ill., outstanding researcher
for excellence in the field of pharmacokinetics, which is the study of how the
body interacts with a drug. Granneman is Abbott's center director of critical
pharmacology and pharmacokinetics, and has more than 25 years of Abbott service.
His work measures and predicts how new drugs will behave in humans.
Two research teams, one from Abbott's Global Pharmaceutical Research and
Development group and one from Ross Products Division, were respectively
acknowledged for their scientific innovation. Abbott's Global Pharmaceutical
Research and Development group was recognized for inventing and implementing a
patented, breakthrough technology called Micro-Arrayed Compound Screening, that
enables the drug discovery process and accelerates the identification of lead
compounds for drug discovery programs. The team within Abbott's Ross Products
Division was recognized for the development of a specialized medical food,
Oxepa(TM), designed for use with patients with acute lung injury or acute
respiratory distress syndrome.
In keeping with Abbott Laboratories' long history of philanthropy, in addition
to individual recognition, outstanding research honorees each receive a monetary
award they donate to any college or university in the United States.
"These awards are built on Abbott's continued leadership in science and
innovation," said Jeffrey M. Leiden, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice president,
pharmaceuticals and chief scientific officer, Abbott Laboratories. "This year's
honorees demonstrate the powerful combination of leadership, expertise and
creativity that leads to real innovation."
Abbott Laboratories established the Volwiler Society in 1985 to recognize the
company's most distinguished scientists and engineers. Named for the late Dr.
Ernest H. Volwiler, Ph.D., a scientist and former Abbott president and chairman
of the board, the society encourages professional growth and constant pursuit of
innovation and scientific discovery. Volwiler is recognized in the National
Inventors Hall of Fame by the U.S. Patent Office for his part in the discovery
of sodium pentothal, one of the world's most widely used anesthetic agents. The
new appointees bring total membership to 182.
A committee of Abbott's scientific leaders elects and promotes members of the
society. Candidates are evaluated on their ingenuity, scientific excellence,
consistent productivity and performance at Abbott. There are four levels of
